Why does my Apple Search Ads campaign get impressions but few installs?

With 10,388 impressions, 72 taps, two installs, and $80 spend, both visible funnel transitions are weak: TTR is 0.69% and tap-to-install conversion is 2.78%. Diagnose search intent and ad appeal first, then the product page; do not label the whole product a failure from two acquired users.

01

Reconstruct the funnel before proposing a fix.

The campaign paid about $1.11 per tap: $80 divided by 72. At a 2.78% tap-to-install rate, that becomes roughly $40 per install. Lowering the bid alone may reduce cost per tap, but the larger leverage is earning more qualified taps and converting more of those taps into installs.

02

Low TTR points to intent, relevance, or visible appeal.

Break results down by actual search term, keyword, match type, country, and ad variation. A keyword can sound relevant to the developer while meaning something different to the searcher. Check whether the app name, icon, subtitle, and first visible assets immediately answer that specific query; pause terms that repeatedly generate impressions without qualified taps.

03

Low tap-to-install conversion points to the product page.

After a tap, the user evaluates screenshots, previews, ratings, reviews, pricing cues, credibility, and the match between the ad promise and the listing. Create a custom product page for a coherent keyword theme, remove expectation gaps, and test one material change at a time. A full UI redesign inside the app cannot fix a store page that fails before download.

04

Use enough data at the right level.

Seventy-two taps and two installs are enough to stop scaling an obviously uneconomic configuration, but not enough to estimate retention or product-market fit precisely. Consolidate the next test around a small number of high-intent exact terms so each additional tap answers the same question instead of being scattered across unrelated queries.

05

Separate marketing failure from product-market fit.

Search impressions show that the queries exist, not that searchers want this product. Taps test the visible promise; installs test the listing decision; activation, retention, and payment test the product. Conclude that product-market fit is weak only after the right audience receives a clear promise, installs in sufficient numbers, and still fails to retain or pay.

Common questions

What is a healthy Apple Search Ads conversion rate?

There is no universal threshold across brand, generic, competitor, discovery, country, and app category traffic. Use your own segmented baseline and paying-user economics; avoid treating a platform-wide average as a pass/fail line.

Should I lower bids when CPA is $40?

Lower or pause bids if $40 exceeds your economic ceiling, but also repair query selection and product-page conversion. A cheaper tap sent through the same leaking funnel may still be unprofitable.

Should I use broader keywords to get more data?

Not during this diagnosis. More heterogeneous traffic makes the failure harder to locate. Start with controlled high-intent terms, establish message match, then reopen bounded discovery.
