Popular question · small-budget playbook
Why are my Apple Search Ads burning money?
Small budgets usually fail when expensive markets, high-intent exact terms, and open-ended discovery all compete for the same money. Separate the decisions you need to measure, cap exploration, and optimize for paying-user economics rather than the cheapest install.
Give each budget one clear job.
Separate brand, category, competitor, and discovery intent when they need different bids or evaluation rules. A lean account does not need dozens of campaigns, but it should not let a broad discovery query consume the budget intended for a proven exact keyword.
Start controlled, then fund discovery deliberately.
Exact match gives tighter query control but can still include close variants. Broad match and Search Match are useful for finding new terms; they are not automatically wasteful. Put discovery in its own bounded campaign or ad group, inspect actual search terms, promote winners to exact, and add exact negatives to prevent overlap.
Separate markets when their economics differ.
A single multi-country campaign is reasonable when language, customer value, goals, and budget treatment are genuinely similar. Separate a large or expensive market when it can drain the shared budget or when its conversion value differs. Do not choose a cheaper country solely for low CPI if those users monetize differently.
Fix message match before raising spend.
The search term, app title, first screenshots, custom product page, onboarding, and paywall should tell one continuous story. If high-intent taps do not install, improve the listing. If installs do not activate or pay, diagnose product and monetization before bidding more aggressively.
Use an economic stop rule.
Define the maximum spend allowed before a target, search term, or market must produce an activation or paying user. Pause or lower bids when the evidence crosses that threshold, while allowing enough time for delayed subscription outcomes. The useful scoreboard is CAC, contribution, and ROAS—not install count alone.
Common questions
Should a small advertiser disable Search Match?
Disable it in controlled brand, category, and competitor ad groups, but consider a separate low-budget discovery ad group with Search Match on. Turning it off everywhere prevents waste but also removes a source of new query discovery.
Should I run only one country?
One country makes a small test easier to interpret. Group countries only when customer value, language, goals, and expected auction economics are similar enough that a shared budget will not hide the result.
Are long-tail exact keywords always cheaper?
No. They often face less competition, but may also have almost no search volume or ambiguous intent. Judge each term by actual impressions, search-term relevance, paying-user CAC, and available scale.
