Popular question · optimization objective
Does Apple Ads Maximize Conversions optimize for paying users?
No. Apple describes Maximize Conversions as an automated strategy that maximizes app downloads at an average target cost per install. It does not directly optimize toward your subscriptions, purchases, retention, or revenue, so a better Apple-reported CPA does not automatically mean better customers.
Know exactly what the bidder is optimizing.
Maximize Conversions uses an auto-bidder and Search Match to prioritize queries likely to produce installs, with the goal of averaging the target CPA across a week. Apple's target CPA is defined per install. The system cannot optimize for a downstream event it is not using as its campaign objective.
Lower install CPA can produce worse business value.
Automated matching may find inexpensive queries that install readily but activate, subscribe, retain, or spend less. Compare Maximize Conversions and Manage Bids using paying-user CAC and cohort ROAS after the same maturity window, not only Apple's install CPA and volume.
Manual bidding provides control, not guaranteed quality.
Manage Bids lets you select exact and broad keywords, inspect search terms, set max CPT bids, and isolate brand or proven high-intent themes. That makes business-quality diagnosis easier, but manual campaigns still fail when the assumed query intent or product economics are wrong.
Measure brand capture and incrementality separately.
Search Match can include searches related to the app, potentially including brand demand. Check search-term visibility and Impression Share where available, separate brand reporting, and avoid assuming every attributed brand install was incremental. If the automated strategy obscures the decision you need to make, run a bounded manual comparison.
Common questions
Should I use Maximize Conversions only for discovery?
It can be useful for discovery, but it is also a complete automated bidding strategy. Use it where install volume is a valid proxy or where you can independently evaluate downstream cohorts.
Is manual exact match always more profitable?
No. It offers tighter control and attribution clarity, but profitability still depends on bid price, search intent, listing conversion, and post-install value.
How long should I compare the strategies?
Apple recommends at least two weeks before assessing Maximize Conversions. Your business comparison may need longer so trials convert and subscription cohorts reach a matched age.
